WE MADE a digital companion to the landmark exhibit, Cambodia 1975-1979 at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM). As part of their ongoing initiatives to educate the public and end genocide around the world, the USHMM commissioned Seven Mile Media to design and build the companion piece to their exhibit on the Cambodian genocide which opened at the museum in Summer 2015. Drawing on a wealth of research, the interactive sought to enlighten students, policy makers and the public of the horrifying events that occurred in 1970s Cambodia and to ensure that atrocities like this never happen again.
The biggest challenge this project presented was figuring out a way to organize pages upon pages of information and media in a digestible and approachable interactive format. The museum could only fit a relatively small amount of information into the physical exhibit itself. The online component was meant act as a companion to the exhibit by supplementing and augmenting the information and artifacts on display.
